 Name: Balrog Race: Ainur (Maiar) Actor: CGI Aliases: Durin's Bane Appears in: FotR, TTT Movie Bio: The Balrog is a demon of the ancient world, a spirit of fire swathed in dark shadows. At the end of the First Age, it escaped from Angband and hide itself in the misty mountains beneath Khazad-dûm. In the Third Age, the mithril-miners of Dwarf King Durin VI stumbled upon it and it awoke from its long sleep. Durin was slain and the mines of Moria eventually deserted. When the Fellowship passed through Moria, Gandalf confronted the Balrog and it fell into the depths as Gandalf broke the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. However, Gandalf was drawn after him by the Balrog's whip and they both fell for eight days through the deepest caverns beneath Moria.
