He has previously gone to an adventure which had earned him fame and wealth. While in his travels, he also picked up a magical ring that could make him invisible when he puts it on. It was years later when Gandalf discovered that the ring was actually the One Ring, belonging to the dark lord Sauron. Armed with this information, he persuaded Bilbo to leave the Ring behind, which would be taken up by Frodo, his cousin and heir.
