He travelled around Middle Earth for 1, 500 years and learnt much of the people's cultures and languages. He was closest in friendship with the Elves and very fond of the Hobbits. Movie Bio Sometime after his visit to Hobbiton to attend the birthday party of his old friend, Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf was horrified to discover that the mysterious magical ring in his friend's possession was in fact the One Ring of Sauron. He feared for the life of Frodo, Bilbo's nephew who inherited the ring, and the shadow that threatened to cover Middle Earth should it returned to its true master. When offered the Ring, he rejected it for it would not bring about a solution but a disaster. He warned Frodo of the approaching peril and advised him to take the Ring to Bree where they arranged to meet after he had sought advice on what to do from Saruman, head of the Istari. However, he was shocked to discover Saruman had betrayed the Istari and was planning an alliance with Sauron. He rejected angrily Saruman's attempts to persuade him to do likewise and had a confrontation in which he lost and was imprisoned on the pinnacle of Orthanc. He was able to escape with the help of Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles. He went to Imladris where he found Frodo safe and sound. He was one of the prime movers in the council Elrond held to discuss the matter of the Ring among the representatives of the people of Middle Earth. When Frodo volunteered to take the Ring to Mount Doom to destroy it, Gandalf offered to guide him to Mordor and the Fellowship of the Ring was formed with seven others from the races of Elves, Men, Dwarves and Hobbits. However, during the Fellowship's journey through the Mines of Moria, he fell into the chasm of Khazad-dûm after a confrontation with a Balrog. Although thought to be dead, Gandalf survived the fall to continue his duel with the Balrog. After a long battle, he slew his enemy at Durin's Tower but was himself to die from the struggle. However, he was given a new body and sent back by Eru Ilúvatar to complete his task in Middle Earth. Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles in Middle Earth, retrieved him from the peak of Silvertine and sent him to Lórien. Equipment: Ring of Fire, Narya ![]() ![]() Upon his arrival in Middle Earth, Gandalf the Grey was secretly given one of the three Elven Rings by Cirdan the Shipwright who recognized him as the greater and wisest among the five wizards. Gandalf did not wear Narya until his departure to the West at the end of the War of the Ring. Spike Brown Staff ![]() ![]() Gandalf the Grey carried about with him a spike brown staff which served partly as an agency of his power, as can be seen when he faced the Balrog in Moria. Besides functioning as a useful walking stick, it was also thought to symbolise what he was and his position in the Istari. This staff was thought to have been taken by Saruman during their conflict in Orthanc. Gandalf was imprisoned on top of the tower and escaped to Imladris without retrieving his staff. Second Spike Staff
![]() It was not known how Gandalf came by this second staff but it may be presumed he fashioned it himself. The spikes of this staff branched outward instead of flowing straight up like the first. A crystal was inserted into the slot at the top to emit light in the darkness of Moria. This staff was lost when Gandalf fell at Khazad-dûm. Glamdring/Foe-hammer ![]() One of two Elven rune swords forged in Gondolin in the First Age. It was made for Turgon, King of Gondolin. The sword was lost during the First Age in the Fall of Gondolin and found by Gandalf in a nest of Trolls. It was identified by Elrond and was thereafter borne by Gandalf. The sword fell into the chasm at Khazad-dûm but Gandalf caught hold of it and wielded it to great effect against the Balrog which he finally defeated. It was retrieved from the peak of Silvertine where Gandalf dropped it when he died. Gandalf the White took it with him when he went to the West. Glamdring was also known by other names. The Orcs called it Beater. It was also called by its translated name Foe-hammer. Pipe ![]() Gandalf the Grey carried a pipe for he had acquired the habbit of pipe-smoking from the Hobbits. It was often slotted into the top of his spike staff. More Pictures Movie Quotes: * A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to. * Bilbo Baggins!! Do not take me for some conjurer of cheap tricks. I am not trying to rob you. I’m trying to help you. * Don't tempt me Frodo! I dare not take it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand Frodo, I would use this Ring from a desire to do good. But through me, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine. * Tell me, “friend”, when did Saruman the wise abandon reason for madness?! * There is only one Lord of the Ring! Only one who can bend it to his will. And he. does. not. share. power! * There is one who could unite them, one who could reclaim the throne of Gondor. * Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul. * You feel its power growing, don't you? I've felt it too. You must be careful now. Evil will be drawn to you from outside the Fellowship. And, I fear, from within. * You must trust yourself. Trust your own strengths * There are many powers in this world, for Good or for Evil. Some are greater than I am. And against some I have not yet been tested. * And now the Ring had drawn him here. He will never be rid of his need for it. He hates and loves the Ring, as he hates and loves himself. Sméagol's life is a sad story. Yes, Sméagol he was once called. Before the Ring found him...before it drove him mad. * Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo’s hand. Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? * Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise can not see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill…before this is over. * The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many. * So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. * A Balrog— a demon of the ancient world. This foe is beyond any of you. Run! * I am the servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udûn! * Go back to the Shadow! * YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!! * Fly, you fools! |
