Movie Bio:

Owner of the Ring for the last 500 years, Gollum lost the Ring to Bilbo in a cave beneath the Misty Mountains. Gollum's mind is ruled by the Ring, his 'precious', and he is always trying to get it back.

He follows the Fellowship after spotting them in Moria and after the breaking of the Fellowship, follows Sam and Frodo into the Emyn Muil, where he attempts to take the Ring. Instead he is caught and Frodo compells him by the power of the Ring to take them into Mordor.

Along the way, Frodo begins to pity Gollum and the state the Ring has left him in. Frodo attempts to connect with him by calling him Smeagol, his original name, now nearly forgotten. Smeagol had been supressed by Gollum, his more ruthless personality, and the two begin to fight for control. When Gollum is captured at the Forbidden Pool with Frodo's deception, Gollum regains control, and thence forward plots to recapture the Ring and kill the hobbits.
