Everard Proudfoot is one of the Hobbits of the Shire, who does justice to the family name he bears - as JRR Tolkien wrote in The Fellowship of the Ring: [His name was] well merited; his feet were large, exceptionally furry, and both were on the table. This is an image that is recalled in the movie, the second time Mr Proudfoot is onscreen: as a guest at Bilbo’s eleventy-first birthday party, he sits well-fed at the dinner table, his feet proudly on display. Mr. Proudfoot also makes another appearance, earlier on in the film: As Gandalf arrives in the Shire, and rides his cart across Hobbiton, Mr. Proudfoot steps outside his Hobbit Hole to look at the fireworks display that Gandalf provides for the children.
