![]() Name: Peregrin Took Race: Hobbit Actor: Billy Boyd Aliases: Pippin, Fool of a Took Appears in: FotR, TTT, RotK Movie Bio: Peregrin (Pippin) Took is a Hobbit of the Shire, a kind, playful soul without a care in the world (but with a great fondness for ale). A great friend of Meriadoc Brandybuck, the two enjoy raiding Farmer Maggot’s crops – more out of fun than out of hunger, for both belong to respected and well-off Hobbit families. During one of their usual raids, Pippin bumps into Frodo Baggins (his second cousin once removed on [Frodo’s] mother's side, and […] third cousin twice removed on [Frodo’s] father's side). With Merry by his side (and Samwise Gamgee by Frodo’s), Pippin is forced to make a narrow escape from Farmer Maggot’s scythe. Thus, through chance, the young Hobbit is pushed into an adventure that he could never predict. In the blink of an eye, the four Hobbits are on the run, chased by Riders in Black, forced to flee for their lives. Barely escaping, they make their way into the town of Bree, where they find solace (and beer) in The Prancing Pony. Still on the run, though, they are forced to seek refuge in anonymity – as "Mr Underhill" and party. Discovering the existence of the Pint of Beer, Pippin lets his merriment (and his loquaciousness) get the best of him, and exposes Mr Underhill’s real identity as Frodo Baggins. This starts a chain of events that The One Ring is only too happy to take advantage of, and that will lead, in the end, to a meeting with Strider. Finding an ally in this mysterious ranger (who, unfortunately, is ignorant of Second Breakfast), the four Hobbits are led to Rivendell. However, the lack of Second Breakfast gets the best of Pippin and Merry and, in the ruins of Weathertop, hunger speaks louder than restraint. Cooking a mighty supper of tomatoes and bacon, the Hobbits unintentionally attract the attention of the Riders in Black… which leads to an unwanted confrontation amongst the ruins. There, Frodo Baggins is speared by a Morgul blade, being ultimately saved by Arwen of Imladris. In Rivendell, Frodo awakens, his wound partially healed. Pippin is overjoyed to have his cousin back, safe and sound. By now, Pippin is too involved in Frodo’s quest to turn back… so he can’t resist eavesdropping on the proceedings when Elrond gathers a Council to discuss the fate of the Ring. Hearing about the forming of a Group of Fellows to accompany Frodo on his mission, Pippin and Merry insist on being allowed to join. Elrond, though reluctant, trusts Gandalf’s intuition and lets the young Hobbits join the mission… quest… thing. And thus it is that Pippin – a part of the Fellowship more by chance than by merit – will end up taking a central role in many of the tribulations which are to follow. Nowhere is this more evident than in the crossing through Mória, where Pippin’s playfulness starts a chain of events that nobody could predict. Distracted by a skeleton that he finds resting by a well, Pippin can’t resist touching it, inadvertently pushing it into the depths of the mines. The resulting noise was heard in every corner of Mória. This alerts the resident Orcs to the presence of the Fellowship in Mória, which leads to a dangerous confrontation with a horde of goblins and a Cave troll. The resulting racket awakens the Balrog, a situation which culminates in the loss of Gandalf the Grey. The Company is reduced to 8. They seek refuge in Lothlórien, where Galadriel presents the group with gifts which befit the fellows’ personality. Pippin is given an elven cloak, a brooch and a Noldorin dagger and belt. This same brooch would prove vital much later on in the quest. The Fellowship, rested, returns to the quest. However, when they reach Amon Hen, the members are ambushed by Saruman’s Uruk-Hai. Pippin and Merry risk their lives to attract the attention of the attackers (and, thus, divert attention from Frodo, the Ringbearer). This act of bravery is followed by an ever more poignant sacrifice: Boromir dies defending Pippin and Merry, who – nevertheless - are captured by the troop of Uruk-Hai. At the same time, Frodo secretly leaves with Sam to Mordor, thus breaking the Fellowship. Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn then vow to recover the hobbits at any cost.
