Movie Bio:

The Ringwraiths were originally nine Kings of men. They were each given a Ring of Power by Sauron the Deceiver. Blinded by greed and power, they took the Rings without question. Only to fall into Sauron's control and bound to his will.

The Nine were neither living nor dead, exisiting in both the real and wraith-world. Their presence instill dread and fear in the living creatures which fled the moment they approached. The mightiest among them was the Witch-King.

They were drawn to the One Ring and could feel its presence at all times. Especially when they were near it, it would try to reveal itself. When the One Ring resurfaced in the Third Age, they set out from Minas Morgul, armed with the knowledge that it resided at the Shire in the hands of a Hobbit called Baggins. They tracked the Ring Bearer, Frodo Baggins, to the watchtower of Amon Sûl and thereafter chased the injured Frodo to the Ford of Imladris where the might of the river was raised against them and they were swept away.

However, they could not be killed and were once more hunting for Frodo whose trail was picked up again at Osgiliath where the Witch-King almost retrieved the Ring but was foiled.
