When Frodo was instructed to bring the One Ring to Rivendell, Sam was chosen to follow him. In Imladris, Frodo decides to take up the quest of destroying the Ring. Eight other companions were chosen, including Sam. In the end, the only member of the Fellowship to follow Frodo to his doom was Sam himself. On the way to Mordor, the two hobbits encountered Gollum. Frodo was sympathetic to it, but Sam still has lingering suspicions about the creature. They have yet to complete their quest in Mordor.
