He was the acknowledged leader of the Istari. Like Gandalf, he travelled around in Middle Earth but mainly in the East for a thousand years. He was appointed the chief of the Council of the Wise which was formed after his return. It was at this time, he began to study the history and the creation of the Rings of Power. He also took up abode at Orthanc after being given the keys by Steward Beren of Minas Tirith. Movie Bio It was not known that Saruman had betrayed the Istari until Gandalf the Grey hastened to him, seeking his advice on what ought to be done with its discovery. He revealed to Gandalf that he had been aware of the movements of Sauron and his fellowers. He wished to join forces with Sauron and tried to persuade Gandalf to do likewise. Shocked by this betrayal, Gandalf refused angrily, deeming Saruman had indeed lost all wisdom and reason to support evil. Angered by his statement, Saruman had a battle of wills with Gandalf which he won. He removed Gandalf's staff and imprisoned him at the pinnacle of Orthanc. He made a second attempt to coerce Gandalf to his side but Gandalf made his escape by jumping onto the back of Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles as he flew past just beneath the pinnacle of the tower. Under Sauron's command, Saruman built an army of Uruk-hai and Wargs. In the process, the land around Orthanc was devastated and the river damed. Aware of the quest to destroy the One Ring, Saruman used whatever means he had to obstruct the Fellowship. Although he appeared to be carrying out Sauron's command by sending a small contingent of Uruk-hai after the Fellowship, Saruman secretly ordered them to bring the Hobbits to him for he desired the Ring himself. At the same time, working through his agent Grima Wormtongue, he gained control over Theoden, King of Rohan. With the King held in thrall, he incited the Dunlanders against the Rohirrim and sent both them and his Uruk-hai to burn and pillage the villages of the Rohirrim. However, he did not hold sway over Theoden for long for Gandalf returned from the dead and released the King from his spell. Undeterred, he sent Wargs to hunt down the Rohirrim refugees as they fled Edoras to Helm's Deep. His army of 10, 000 Uruk-hai thereafter marched to eliminate the Rohirrim. With his knowledge of certain chemicals, he instructed his Uruk-hai to use gunpowder to blast a hole in the Deeping Wall of Helm's Deep. His army, however, was defeated by the Rohirrim exiles after a night's siege. He himself suffered a serious defeat when his production factories at Isengard were destroyed by an army of Ents angered by his wanton destruction of nature. He met his end in ROTK at the hands of Grima Wormtongue. Equipment: Palantir ![]() The palantir in Orthanc was one of seven Stones of Seeing brought to Middle Earth by Elendil. It was a powerful crystalline globe which enable the user to witness events and communicate with other users over great distances. Black Staff ![]() Saruman's staff was black. The top has four alpha fins shaped like the four pinnacle spikes of Orthanc. It held a white oval crystal globe that lit up whenever Saruman utilised his powers. The tip similarly echoed these four fins with a knuckled ring. More Pictures Movie Quotes: Fellowship of the Ring * Sauron has regained much of his former strength.
