DON’T
LET THE SUN GO DOWN ON ME
(“Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”)

by Niphredil
I can’t take no more of this darkness
Even sunlight seems to fade to ghostly grey
It’s cold and dark, and phantoms dance before me
It seems that nothing can chase these wraiths away.
In Elrond’s house one day in late December
I took a Ring to cast into the Crack
But on the way my soul was torn to pieces
Innocence lost, beyond recall, no going back.
Don’t let the sun go down on me
Sweet Lady of the Stars, have I a place on Aman’s Quay?
I’m sure the light of Valinor alone can set me free
For losing Sauron’s Ring was like the sun going down on me.
Nowhere to turn from memories that haunt me
So long, my friend: you’ll soon be whole again.
The hurt’s too deep, and guilt and anguish taunt me
Must take that ship, out of this vale of grief and pain.
Oh, don’t let the sun go down on me
Must take that passage West, so that my soul can wander free
I’m bowing out of mortal time and history
For losing everything is like the sun going down on me.
Don’t let the Stars fade out of sight
Remember Lórien, and Lady Varda’s heavenly light
I’m clutching Arwen’s gem to help me get through the
night.
Could any of the Wise have done better, for all their might?
Yes, I lost everything, but I never gave up the fight.
