Stairway
to Aman
(“Stairway to Heaven”)

by Niphredil
There are Elves in my dreams
They are riding in streams
And they’re climbing the Stairway to Aman.
There’s a queen kind and fair
With white gems in her hair
And she showed me the gateway to Aman.
Ohhh, ohhh, and they’re climbing the Stairway to Aman …
And I yearn for those strands
And the far elvish lands
But I’m mortal and frail, and I’m frightened.
And I ache for release
And I long for heart’s peace
But there’s no going back once you get there.
Ohhhh, it makes me wonder.
Ohhhh, it makes me wonder.
There’s a feeling I get
When I look to the West
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
There’s unrest in my soul
And a deep, gaping hole
And a wound that is open and bleeding.
Ohhhh, it makes me tremble.
Ohhhh, it really makes me tremble.
Elrond whispered to me, that amid autumn trees
I would find him, if I chose to join him
Arwen gave me her stone
But I feel so alone
And I hear voices mocking my anguish.
Ohhh …
If there are tears that blot the Red Book, don’t be alarmed
now
Catharsis bleeds right through the quill
I see two paths that stretch before me, but in the long run
The past holds demons that can kill.
And it makes me tremble, ohhh …
My pain is throbbing and it won’t go, in case you don’t
know
The West is calling me to go …
They all say that my soul is elvish, but I’m not sure
If my path lies o’er the whispering waves.
And as I view the tortuous road
I know I have to shed this load.
I see a Lady clad in white
And I can see that way is right.
Can’t bear to bid my friends goodbye
But I hope in time they will see why
I seek the peace that can transcend
These tortured memories that rend
And I know one way alone remains:
And I’m climbing the Stairway to Aman.
