I Don't Know

by Arwen 007

I don’t know.

I don’t know what holds the future for this hobbit and his friends.

I don’t know to what ends

They may find themselves.

I don’t know.

I don’t know which will crumble first to the call,

The seduction,

The bottomless fall from which no one has risen.

I don’t know.

I don’t know if this man will become what he should be.

Will he take up his sword,

Or will he rise up and flee?

Has the world seen the last of the white Gondor tree?

I don’t know.

Will the elf see his homeland, will the dwarf see his caves?

Will the armies, black forests of flagpoles and staves,

Cut off from the world all the good that remains?

I don’t know.

Will Mordor flower? Such a thing is unlikely.

Will Isengard tower fall into time and forgetting?

I don’t know.

I, Elrond’s daughter, know naught of these things.

I have seen the destruction, seduction of rings,

And in time beyond measure I could not realize

The strength it will take

And the hearts that will break before this Ring’s demise.

Will this Fellowship survive?

I don’t know.

But…

I do know

Neither man nor elf nor dwarf nor hobbit nor the wanderer grey

Will let go of hope in the Ringbearer’s quest.

Hope is all we have left, we will not win open war.

So this is my shield, this is my sword.

I know,

Beyond any doubt,

That all we have is hope this day.

This is truth.

This I know.

And all I can do is pray.
