View Full Version : The Shire - Bend, Oregon
Has anyone seen this yet?
Waaaaaaaaaay out of our price range of course, ($300k range up to $1m +!)and I doubt they'd let us put up a fence for our dogs, but it looks like a really cool neighbourhood. And, the houses are "green" built, which is extra cool!

Thanks Reba, I'm always interested to see 'our' types of house designs. Eventually I'd like to build one, when finances permit...
there are plans on the internet somewhere how to build a hobbit hole. That would be neat I think. But Melkor would be bumping his head all the time like Gandalf, so I dunno if we'd get around to it ;)

I think Tim linked to this site. A couple of years ago though. Touring them (if possible) might finally give me a reason to go to the Eastern/Central side of the state.
"Poor with a view" no longer describes Bend!

I need to go to see this.. you never know when a windfall will happen .. though I wonder why they did not make a place like this in the valley.. I live in the WIllamette Valley and there are places here that always seem so shire like..and it is pretty dry around Bend OR..
I was wondering what one does (for a living, etc.) in Bend on the dry side of the mountains?

I often wonder that too.:D
I'm guessing there are a lot of (wealthy and semi-wealthy) retirees over there. Some software types maybe, or others whose jobs aren't dependent on location. Otherwise there's not much economic base.

There's a lot about their economy in Bend's Wikipedia article, but no mention of The Shire.

Gah... I want to live there! That is just so damned cool!!
However, ONE DAY, I shall build a hobbit-hole in my garden. One day...
