Adding the White Council makes this a more complicated question.

Without the White Council, I'd say split the films just as Gandalf leaves the group and they are about to step into an ominous and dark Mirkwood. That would offer the resolution of reaching safety with Beorn but also yield a cliff hanger of losing Gandalf and entering Mirkwood.
