Week 66 Poll

Finally, some inspiration for something new to try and kick-start this old feature again.

So, the legal wrangling over The Hobbit is on-going. But is it the best narrative?

Children of Hurin has been released and there are already talks of it being made into a film. But is it too dark?

Just what would YOU like to see as the next Tolkien film, and why?

well..... I am divided about that.... in the end I voted Beren & Luthien, perhaps because it is marginally less dark than Turin's story and might therefore sell better - also, it has an amazing role for a woman.... I have no idea who one would cast as Luthien.... as far from Keira Knightley's Guinnevere in the last King Arthur film would be essential in any case.....

still - a film of Turin's story would be great, too.

No way - as long as Christopher Tolkien has a say, as far as we can tell (and may he live long!)

As far as the Hobbit is concerned... I am fond of the book, but I like the stuff that is more like proper myth better than its children's story style... and the 13 dwarves are challenge for every script writer - not to think of having that many crucial but hardly distinguishable characters on sceen much of the time, and all of them in heavy prosthetics. Not my idea of a movie that is likely to please me easily....

Not to repeeat myself, but it's time to cast The Hobbit, while McKellan can still manage the role and while the Lasses are still young enough to drool over their hero, who can get a bit part.

What I would really like to have for Christmas though, is FotR 1.5, after it turns out that PJ shot the OldForest/Bombadil/Barrow Wight stuff after all and has just been sitting on it. It would be nice if he fixed the Weathertop scenes, too.

It’s a no brainer, The Hobbit would be an instant commercial success, we would all go and see it and for a new generation of fans, it would be a great starting point. The more Middle-Earth tales are commercially successful, the greater the likelihood that the Children of Hurin etc will be produced.

I definitly think that The Hobbit may be a big hit. I know many people will be looking forward to it. I wonder how it will turn out...I still have the cartoon of it, it would be interesting to see the prolouge of The Lord Of The Rings be restored.

Probably when things are announced, we start getting some traffic again and actually get some people voting on a poll.

This thing kept my moniker on the front page for seven months. I found that sorta touching.

I think they should make the Fall of Gondolin a movie Even though it might be short. If it was on the poll, they should make the Silmarilion a movie

Why not make a five part movie of the Silmarillion, it works for me.

Trying to make The Silmarillion into screen versions would be a massive undertaking.

But it could be done in 5 or 6 parts. Heck, if Star Wars can do, I don't see why this can't be done.

Beren and Luthien would have broad audience appeal. It's all about the 'shipping' these days. Besides, one of the strongest things about doing a romance with elves is using the language...so you can say corny romantic lines, and they don't sound corny.LOL

In my opinion most(if not all) of Tolkien's works would be great movies. Or maybe I'm just too obsessed.
But I can't believe nobody wants to see The Children Of Hurin as a movie? I reciently read and loved it. True, it is dark and the ending is quite gruesome, but am I the only one that think this epic tragity would be agreat movie?

I'm with you. I think they'd all make great films, even the tragic ones. The difficulty with those from the Silmarillion will be that there's little to no dialogue between characters. We have a big storyboard with those stories, with a blank script.

Without familiar lines from the beloved books, it will seem very different from LOTR or Hobbit, even if we're already familiar with Tolkien's elves.

once again, they would have to turn to Peter Jackson, Phillippa Boyens, and others to fill that dialogue void; and tighten up the many years between action sequences. The tough part will be to make it approachable enough for people to engage in the story, without offending Tolkienites that might bristle at a specific characterization they chose that runs counter to what we carry around in our heads.

LUTHIEN: When the elven ship docks, I'm getting off with you...
BEREN: This is crazy
LUTHIEN: I know. It doesn't make any sense. That's why I trust it

I want to see The Hobbit, of course. But seeing that The Children of Hurin has no votes, I think I should vote for it. It would make a great movie.

It would.
I would also love to see Beren and Luthien as a movie. Infact, why not the whole Silmarillion?

that would be a lot of movies.

That's a lot of movies... How about certain stories out of it? Middle-Earth! The Early Years...
