Beowulf movie?

Its a bit early to begin talking about it perhaps, since imdb says it won't be out till next year sometime, but I was wondering if anyone had heard that they were making this movie? As a student of medieval studies and historical linguistics, I'm quite intrigued. Though it certainly has the potential to be absolutely horrible, like any adaptation of a literary or mythological work.

Sorry, Swifty - that link is taking me to somewhere that says "Campo Bravo"! Didn't Elwen mention this sometime ago?

Here's the correct link. Also, according to IMDb, there was a sci-fi version of the Beowulf story (excuse me while I ) made in 1999 with Christopher Lambert, of Highlander fame. Apparently it sucked, which somehow doesn't surprise me at all. Incidentally, the movie is starring Gerard Butler as the hero himself, and he is the one who is playing the Phantom in the upcoming Phantom of the Opera movie.

Cully, I searched and didn't find anything about a Beowulf movie here in the Cineplex or by Elwen anywhere, unless she misspelled the title.

EDIT: Whoopee, my 800th post!

Elwen misspelling the title? She'd probably go and chop her own head off if she ever did such a thing!

I must be making it up, Námo (BTW thanks for that accent software - it's great because we've just been XPed at work and the old system I used no longer works). I did a search too and couldn't find anything...

The director seems only to have done TV - lots of it in Canada...

Have you read Crichton's 'Eaters of the Dead'? It was made into the movie 'The Thirteenth Warrior'. An engrossing read (no pun intended ) especially when I twigged to what Crichton was actually referring too!

LOL! Well, well... my reputation proceeds me... bad spelling and the total nut for ancient things

Not my kind of ancient, though, although I am intrigued. I am pretty sure I didn't mention it before - but I am sure I read about it as well somewhere around here... in the Arthur thread?

Well, a film about ancient NW European mythology (especially when based on a Germanic language, for some reason) is always in danger of ending up looking like Conan or something so I am somewhat apprehensive.

I thought there was a mention of Beowulf in connection with The Thirteenth Warrior on the thread Elwen started about if you liked LOTR watch this - film recommendations list thread. That's not the name of the thread, and I'm too pushed for time to check - sorry!

Conan? Not sure I'd quibble as we run no risk of Arnie these days (and I do like Conan the Barbarian )

You're right, that's where it was. Just saying that The 13th Warrior was 'based' on Beowulf. But I'd never been in that thread before now, so it may also have been mentioned in Arthur - when everyone was talking about the sudden rise of films based on ancient tales.

Oopsie, sorry about the wrong link everyone.

Yes, I do realize that The 13th Warrior was based on Beowulf through Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead. I actually enjoyed that movie (*cough* hunky manflesh*cough* ), though I thought it must have been edited poorly, as some scenes had no connection to other scenes in the movie.

I still have some hopes for this movie, though it is a bit early to tell either way I guess...

Beowulf and Grendel

I'm so excited for this! I just hope they do it right!!

Quote:
Beowulf goes to Hollywood

Hollywood's never-ending quest for epic material has taken it back to "the first horror story" - Beowulf, the Old English poem of monster versus man.

Two film versions of the eighth-century Saxon work are under way as studios rush to capitalise on the fascination with myth and legend exposed by the success of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. J R R Tolkein, who wrote the Middle Earth series, cited Beowulf as one of his key influences.

Warner Bros is behind the movie Beowulf, which will be written by Matthew Sand, an art historian and former New York art dealer. Meanwhile, a rival project, Beowulf and Grendel, from a Canadian/British/Icelandic team, begins filming next month and stars the Scottish actor Gerard Butler.

The bloody poem charts the story of the ancient warrior Beowulf of the Greats, who is called to slay Grendel, a monster attacking a Danish kingdom. After defeating the creature, Beowulf kills Grendel's mother before battling with a fire-breathing dragon.

"My take is that this is the first horror story," Mr Sand told the Hollywood Reporter. "The first action stories included The Iliad and Gilgamesh, but this is the first time you had a creature coming out of the darkness and breaking into your home at night. It's the genesis of so many of the horror archetypes we see today."

Sturla Gunnarsson will direct Butler, who has appeared in films such as Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life and Timeline. A 10-week shoot begins in Iceland next month and the production is to be released next year.

Previous attempts to dramatise the ancient narrative, thought to have been written by a Northumbrian poet, include a 30-minute animated version released in 1998 and Disney's 1999 film 13th Warrior, based on the novelist Michael Crichton's reworking of the tale.

Gerard in the movie "Attila"

another small article:
Quote:
Dark Horizons reports from Variety.com...

Beowulf & Grendel: "Scottish thesp Gerard Butler has signed to play the lead in the Canada/U.K./Iceland co-production "Beowulf & Grendel". Part fable, part horror story, "Beowulf & Grendel," directed by Sturla Gunnarsson ("Rare Birds," "Such A Long Journey"), is an adaptation of the epic poem "Beowulf," about a Norse warrior's battle against Grendel the murderous troll. The epic medieval adventure will lense in Iceland for 10 weeks beginning in August. The setting includes real glaciers, a fake 6th-century village and a replica of a Viking ship..."
Professor Tolkien did a translation for Beowulf, adding comentaries... the book can be ordered at amazon.com

They've already done a Beowulf...starring none other than masterful Christopher Lambert himself . Hopefully this one will be a bit better...

So this is what we were all muttering about in another thread. Thanks for the info, ~RiAnNa_D~. To be honest, I don't know that I can hold out much hope for many more epics - not after Troy and Arthur...

Personally, I really want to see Noggin the Nog and the Ice Dragon make it to the big screen...

What, MORE Beowulf purists than Iliad purists? I don't think so. Not the sort of purists who manage to raise a fuss on the web anyway
And see how much the Troy people cared about the purists (or even moderate people like me who could deal with adaptations)...

I hope the Beowulf fans fare better than us Iliad lovers, though.... fingers crossed...

Well, you may be disappointed. I just read this press release. It seems like the studio has made a few changes in light of "Troy" being something of a let down. Anyway, here is an excerpt.

Beowulf. He's a medieval warrior. Grendel. He's a bumbling ogre with a 'tude. Together, they are cops making the forests safe for the peasants. Courtney Love is Morgana Le Fey, the woman who nearly comes between them. Special appearance by Anthony Hopkins as "Hannibal", Beo's and Gren's gruff but loveable commander. Coming this fall from the makers of "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "Battlefield Earth", with music by Glenn Yarbrough and animated sequences by Ralph Bakshi.

I read that it would also have a Bennifer love story as a subplot.

Just a note: This thread could be merged with this one.

Beowulf

A Beowulf movie? Let's see if their cinematic poeticism is any match for the original oral version, which I doubt.

I saw that version with Christopher Lambert, which I disliked. I don't know where it was made or who made it, but it looked like a European "B" movie that never got picked up by a distributor, probably because it wasn't good enough, and got farmed-out to the minor leagues, as it were, showing up in a video store to sucker people in to renting it because it had a flashy title.

Of course, nowadays, I don't like any movie. Any new movies, that is.

Apparently the title is now Beowulf and Grendel. Interesting. I assume this means that the movie will be focused mainly on the first half of the poem rather than the whole thing (also since there doesn't seem to be a dragon).

Well according to ~RiAnNa_D~ post above Warner Brothers are also doing a version and theirs is just called Beowulf (though it's not listed on IMDB) which might be the reason for the name change.

As to the Dragon according to the Director they are planning on making two films the second will be called "Beowulf and the Dragon"

Sturla Gunnarsson's (the Director) comment can be found in the "Ask the Director" forum of the Discussion board there.

He also has this to say when the film is compared to LotR.

Quote:
While both stories swim out of the same gene pool, our approach to Beowulf & Grendel is quite different from the treatment of LOTR. We're not so much interested in illustrating the hero-myth that the poem, Beowulf has inspired, as to look at it from a modern perspective. Our hero is a complex character, aware of and somewhat burdened by the hero myth that surrounds him. Our Grendel is a character with human emotions and motivations. He's big, fast, cunning and angry, but he has his reasons for seeking vengence from Hrothgar, which Beowulf uncovers in the course of the story. From a filmmaking perspective, this is not a fantasy film. It's brutal, human, funny and made entirely without visual effects. I hope it appeals to LOTR fans, as well as filmgoers who appreciate a more elemental approach toi storytelling.
Shooting begins on Monday.
